The winning entry from The Turnip Prize 2008, “Fleeced” by Ivor Prance, has been bought at private auction for an undisclosed two figure sum by Daniel Berg, of London, England.
Reclusive and eccentric millionaire student Berg commented “I feel very privileged to have bought the piece; I have never bought an artwork before, let alone the winning entry of such a critically acclaimed competition”.
Rumoured to be a clever way of shoring up his off-shore asset portfolio during the turbulent economic times the nouveau collector does not expect it to be a wasted investment. “It’s worth its weight in shark-tanks. With this purchase I’ve secured a comfortable life for myself and my future family including grandkids”.
The work will not be public display in the near future, “I will be displaying it on the shelf in my bedroom. I hope it will always remind me of the plight of John Sergeant and to never take what I have for granted.” The proceeds of the sale will be donated to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Prancing Sergeant Scoops Turnip Prize! This year’s prize has been awarded to Ivor Prance for his work entitled “Fleeced” (A piece of sheep’s wool) at a ceremony held at The New Inn, Wedmore, Somerset. The award was made in front of a packed art loving audience, TV cameramen and photographers cheered when the winner marched across the gallery to accept the prize, a turnip mounted on a six-inch nail. Organisers said, “They were delighted with the lack of effort taken to create the work.” Ivor Prance (69 former army sergeant from Worth, Nr Wookey, Somerset) said, “I have entered this most coveted art award on several occasions and I really feel that the lack of effort this year has really paid off, I knew the moment I came up with the idea I could pull the wool over the judges eyes” Ivor who describes his work as “fluffy, furry and flocculent” added, “the work took no time at all to create, I picked it off of a barbed wire fence whilst thinking how the voting public and unsuccessful competitors must feel after John Sergeant’s controversial exit from Strictly Come Dancing”
