The newest exhibition at Tate Britain in London is a grand celebration of Britain’s taste for the “naughty but nice”. Rude Britannia takes a look at comic art, all the way from saucy postcards, to the savagery of political cartoons. Rude Britannia: British Comic Art is at Tate Britain (020 7887 8825) from 9 June to 5 September 2010. A series of three BBC4 programmes, Rude Britannia, will begin on 14 June.

12a Donkey Do – part 3The design that was agreed with the sponsor was for the donkey to be painted pink and there would be ‘Sooty’ faces and ‘smiley suns’ dotted over the body. The pink colour went on well and I used cut-out templates for the faces to keep the design consistent and to speed things up. I decided to give one of the Sooty faces a ‘Pudsey Bear’ eye-patch to remind people that the Donkey Parade is a charity fund raiser. I also added a stylised gold star to the donkeys face to add a bit of character. The donkey’s eyes are a bit reminiscent of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, so if no one comes up with a better name – Cleopatra it is.
