Art for Arts Sake?

As you may have noticed, we have been publishing the press releases for this year’s Turnip Prize. This annual award seems to be attracting some top entries, which will of course raise public awareness and promote the essence of the award, which is I believe, to ask the question, ‘what is art’. What I appreciate most about the entries, is the clever play on words that the ‘artists’ come up with. I just wish I could think of something. We will bring you the winning entry in due course and hopefully feature a few of the best runners-up.

3rd PRESS RELEASE - NICK CAGE ENTRY - Yet another insignificant development has occurred in this year’s Turnip Prize. An entry has been received from Nick Cage. The sculpture is entitled ‘Knicker-less Cage’ by Sue She, and shows a collection of naked Barbie dolls encaged in wire mesh. Organiser Trevor Prideaux said “this entry was left at my front door, someone knocked and walked away. When I looked out to see who it was I saw a very attractive oriental lady walking down my drive. When I asked her name she replied Alice. Which posses a famous question - Alice, who the ???? is Alice!? After making some enquiries it turned out Alice is Nick Cage’s partner.

WALLACE--VOMIT-l THE TURNIP PRIZETHE TURNIP PRIZE - 2nd PRESS RELEASE FAMOUS ENTRY 2009 - Another insignificant development has occurred in this year’s Turnip Prize. An entry has been received from Wallace & Gromit to mark twenty years of the famous animated characters created by Aardman animations. The sculpture is entitled Wallace & Vomit by Sick Puke and shows Wallace standing in a pile of vomit. Organisers say “this is not art it’s just regurgitation, which gives it a good chance of winning”

A Wet Day in Wales

IMG_0348t A Wet Day in WalesOur latest artist Mandy Spies and her friend Adrian dragged me off to Wales to check out the art scene. We arrived in Newport and it was raining. We took a look around but it was Sunday and Newport was shut… a ghost town… and it was raining. We could only find a few public art sculptures to lift the spirit so we decided to hop on a train to Cardiff.
