Holiday in the Forest – Part Two

On the Friday we took a trip down to the beautiful Symonds Yat on the river Wye, only a few miles from our
campsite at Christchurch, the perfect place for a spot of canoeing. The slow pace of life floating along down stream is bliss, and there is something about being in a canoe that brings out the primeval in you, you do feel like a connection is made, the motion of a paddle through the water, the canoe, the river, an old friend.
Summer in Woolacombe

Well, the school holidays have finally come to an end … thank goodness! I’m exhausted both mentally and physically. So, what have I been up to over the last weeks to keep the kids entertained? We have spent as much time down in Woolacombe as possible. This area of the South West is so beautiful no matter the weather. The coastal paths provide panoramic views and offer good inspiration for my style of painting. I have taken a few photographs of areas along the coastal paths from Lee Beach to Bullpoint Lighthouse. I was hoping to capture a glimpse or two of the family of dolphins that apparently return to this area every year, but unfortunately I was not that lucky. The season isn’t over yet so I may still see them … fingers crossed. As well as my usual day job, keeping the kids happy, walking the dog and keeping on top of the housework - I managed to do some Pebble Art Workshops at a local Kids Club which I found to be thoroughly enjoyable. The kids were really interested in the workshops and were always keen to have another go when I returned for more sessions. I collected pebbles and slate from Rockham Beach and carried them up the endless amount of steps back through the pathways to my caravan. It’s always hard work but worth every step and it keeps me fit!

I helped the children with their designs and then helped them with colour mixing, teaching them about primary colours and how to make lighter and darker shades of colour. When the pebbles had dried I sprayed them with a plastic spray varnish to prevent the paint from wearing off. The pebbles were then ready for the children to take home and put in their gardens or on their desks.

Land Art
September 20, 2009 by Henry Basset · Leave a Comment
I have been finding out about someone who specialises in an unusual form of art. Mark Reaney is a ‘land artist’, or as my boss calls him, an ‘environmental sculptor’. His rather unique form of art involves constructing huge columns of stones or cairns. He erects these creations in various remote areas around the countryside and on beaches and then usually knocks them down for ‘health and safety’ reasons.

Mark has been known to the Art House for a number of years but until now his art has only been seen by the occasional passer-by at the time of their creation. Now he has shed his anonymity by photographing his work for posterity. His monumental creations are captured forever in his wonderful photos, which he guarantees are not enhanced or manipulated in any way.
Holiday in the Forest - Part One

The Clan meet for a camping holiday, four nights and five glorious days of sunshine spent in the Forest of Dean, at Christchurch Campsite, owned and run by the Forestry Commission. Doug and I arrive on site early Wednesday evening and turn our attention to our accommodation for the next four nights and locate the perfect position to pitch up. Once found it’s not long before the tents up, the ciders flowing and we’re in the peaceful surroundings listening to the radio. Soon the draw of the Forest becomes too much and we abandon the tent in favour of a spot of tree hugging and a wander in the woods. By this point I believe I’m rather less of a mixed media artist and rather more a p*** artist.
Introspection

All of my creations are usually presented on canvas or on pebbles. I occasionally paint designs on vases and ornaments I like. I normally work on a collection of designs that have a theme or thought behind them, most of which are usually inspired by sunshine and panoramic natural beauty.
Cows! Why Cows?
September 14, 2009 by Victoria Evans · Leave a Comment
Having lived in Somerset all my life, I grew up surrounded by farms and fields with many breeds of cows. I remember when I was a little girl going to the field gate to see all of them and sometimes feed them. Even back then I named all of them and that’s how I got the names of the cows in my collection so far.
New Artists On Board

Hello again. John has asked me to introduce some new artists who will be making occasional contributions to the website. You have already met Emily O’Mara through her first blog posts, and now you will be able to follow two more artists who will be joining us. Vicky Evans and Jo Gaulton - who paints under the name of Fina. They both have their own very different styles and they will be sharing their experiences and inspirations with us over the coming months.
