If Music Be The Food Of Love …

…it can also be the inspiration for art. My earliest recollections of music inspired art was in art class at school when we were treated to the wonder of the 1812 overture and told to illustrate our interpretation of the music. This went a bit over my head at the time because all I could interpret were cannons and bells. I have no idea what I actually illustrated at the time but later, during the halcyon days of the 60’s, this mad idea of my old art teacher finally took a hold on me and made absolute sense.

Following my little rant about hard times; a short while later, I had one of my best days ever for sales. A family came into the gallery and went on a spending spree. They bought five pieces of original art, four of mine and one by an associate artist, two of which were new pieces that hadn’t even been exhibited in the gallery. My sincere thanks go to them.

The sale of original art is always one of the first casualties of any lack of confidence in the financial markets. New housing developments are at a standstill and people are holding back on moving house, and even re-decorating has been postponed until things improve. Therefore, with people cutting back on what one might term ‘luxury items’, a new piece of artwork on the wall is far less important than food on the table and paying the council tax bill.

Festival Season!

Hurray the festival season is well and truly upon us and last month I packed my bags and headed for the Mendip Hills to Priddy Folk Festival, “the friendliest folk festival in England”. Although a little damp a good time was had by all and when the sun shone out came the sketch book. On the Saturday afternoon I found myself in the Eastwater Marquee, the dance tent, and completely captivated by the energy of the Grimspound Morris. Grimspound take their name from the Neolithic Site on Dartmoor.
