Indian Summer

A new restaurant was opening in Weston and I was approached by the owners to supply the artwork for their walls. Normally this would be a commission to create work to a specific design brief, but in this instance there was no time to start a new project as they were opening within a few days. I suggested that they might like to consider hiring some of my art pieces to tide them over their opening period. They had looked into hiring art from professional companies but the costs were prohibitive and involved long term contracts, whereas dealing with a local artist on a more personal level seemed more acceptable for a new business venture.

Rude Britannia
June 8, 2010 by John Fiddes · Comments Off
The newest exhibition at Tate Britain in London is a grand celebration of Britain’s taste for the “naughty but nice”. Rude Britannia takes a look at comic art, all the way from saucy postcards, to the savagery of political cartoons. Rude Britannia: British Comic Art is at Tate Britain (020 7887 8825) from 9 June to 5 September 2010. A series of three BBC4 programmes, Rude Britannia, will begin on 14 June.
Donkey Do – part 3

The design that was agreed with the sponsor was for the donkey to be painted pink and there would be ‘Sooty’ faces and ‘smiley suns’ dotted over the body. The pink colour went on well and I used cut-out templates for the faces to keep the design consistent and to speed things up. I decided to give one of the Sooty faces a ‘Pudsey Bear’ eye-patch to remind people that the Donkey Parade is a charity fund raiser. I also added a stylised gold star to the donkeys face to add a bit of character. The donkey’s eyes are a bit reminiscent of the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, so if no one comes up with a better name – Cleopatra it is.

Following on from Henry’s report on the imminent Donkey Parade in Weston-super-Mare, I volunteered to decorate one of the donkeys. I was put in touch with one of the sponsors to discuss and agree a design and the donkey was duly delivered to my studio.

@ - Honoured by Museum

For the French, it may always remind them of delicious escargot, but for most everyone else the @ symbol has come to embody the age of the Internet and its constantly evolving language. In honour of the little squiggly’s potency, the Museum of Modern Art in New York announced on Monday that it had added the @ symbol to its architecture and design collection, citing its “design power.” The @ symbol, currently used every day by millions around the world in email addresses, text messages and on twitter.com, is thought to be ancient, the museum said, possibly dating back to the sixth century. Because the symbol is not a concrete thing but an abstract idea, it has changed meaning many times in the course of its existence.
